Neighbors started asking if she would sew suits for them and their daughters. Janette “didn’t want to seem rude,” so she agreed, and suits started flowing from her garage workshop.
Soon she was being asked “Are you the bathing suit Lady?”
The business grew to a storefront on Archibald Ave., with suits being sewn in an industrial building down the driveway. This arrangement worked well for years, with racks filled with a dizzying array of swimsuits styles and fabric choices. Customers could mix and match from pieces on the racks, or have custom-made suits tailored to a perfect fit. However, during the busy warm months, the storefront came to be a little claustrophobic.
In the Spring of 2006, Fresh Peaches moved to a 6,500 square foot building at 12033 Jack Benny Drive (near Quakes Stadium), enabling Jannette to combine the custom tailoring workshop with a spacious showroom, stocked with over 6,000 suits. Styles range from skimpy bikinis to plus-size tankinis, in fabrics to appeal to any taste. Some suits are even studded with Swarovski crystal rhinestones!

Already made suits cost from $45 to $70, and customized suits run $70 to $90. Janette says that, as the manufacturer, she can keep close tabs on the quality and be able to assure customers that all suits are 100% American made.

Most Fresh Peaches customers complain that getting a perfect fit at retail outlets is next to impossible – the bottom may fit fine while the top is completely wrong, or vice versa. And the overwhelming majority of women, who don’t have fashion magazine figures, welcome styles that flatter their curves or hide their flaws. Some customers have not had a suit for years before finding Fresh Peaches!
Fresh Peaches also makes customized costumes for dancers, body builders, or anyone who wants a suit for a special occasion. Whole wedding parties have been outfitted!
Janette’s daughter Lannette now designs many of the swimsuits, and her workspace is festooned with sketches and magazine clippings. She makes use of more than 1,200 bolts of fabric to create unique suits. Her reversible bikini features two complementary patterns, giving the wearer in effect four different suits for the price of one! She also takes pride in being able to create custom suits that hide scars or stretch marks.
